“The Olive Tree, Olea europaea is instantly recognisable as the quintessential Mediterranean tree and stands as the archetypal sentinel of warm, sunny climes. It is an attractive, slow-growing evergreen forming a rounded head of small, silver-grey leaves and is tolerant of hot, dry conditions. Tiny creamy-white flowers appear in summer, followed by small, round green olives that ripen to black. In the Mediterranean olive trees are cultivated widely for their fruits. In Ireland they’re not fully hardy and require a warm, sheltered spot to thrive. They will do well in a large pot or container so alternatively grow olive trees in large pots and move them into the shelter of a cool greenhouse over the winter months.”

Description
The olive tree, Olea europaea is instantly recognisable as the quintessential Mediterranean tree and stands as the archetypal sentinel of warm, sunny climes. The Olive is a slow growing and relatively compact evergreen tree and rarely grows more than 40 feet tall. They are suited to garden or container cultivation, and are hardy and frost resistant to -15C without the need to fleece. Olives are wind resistant and drought hardy, a winning combination that means Olive trees are truly easy to grow.
Full sun and sharp drainage are the key requirements for olive trees and although ultimately a large olive tree plants can easily be confined to any size space by pruning of the branches – annually if needs be.
