Bay Laurel is commonly known as Laurus nobilis or Sweet Bay. The bay tree is a popular evergreen large shrub or small tree suitable for containers or growing in the ground. Kept neatly clipped, the glossy dark green foliage can create stunning formal shapes that make an entrance or look perfect on a patio. Bay leaves can be used fresh or dried and are used in cooking to give a fragrant flavour to soups, stews and other dishes.

Bay Laurel prefers a fertile, moist, well-drained soil and enjoys sun but it can also be adjusted to partial shade. Due to its Mediterranean heritage, Laurus nobilis is exceptionally drought tolerant and flourishes in the hot sun. However, being of a tender nature, it is recommended to position Laurus nobilis in a sheltered spot and provide stem protection during cold weather.

The Bay Laurel has tight clusters of small, yellow-green flowers in Spring. It maintains a good, pyramidal shape and can be grown as a topiary specimen in a medium to large garden, or kept in large patio containers in the kitchen garden.
